"Gnisten" is moved

Many things have happened since the beginning of The History of Frederikhavn's Shipyard organisation in October 2000.
From the start, we had intended to publish a book, but lack of funds has prevented us from doing this. So we decided to tell our story on the Internet and we are also thinking about appearing in a television programme. Time will tell what will happen.

In 2002, an exciting thing happened. We have the opportunity of acquiring and restoring "Gnisten", which is Frederikhavn's old pilot boat. "Gnisten" was built in 1924 - 1925 by Christian Nielsen's shipyard in Frederikshavn.
"Gnisten" is situated in a field in Baekvej, which is north of Frederikshavn.
We have to go out there and have a look for ourselves at this wondrous sight, but what a sad sight met our eyes. She was looking scrawny and in disrepair with mink farms as neighbours. Never the less, we have to try and get her sea worthy again.

The Ships Preservation Fund has approved the restoration of "Gnisten" as a ship worth restoring and will also help us financially. But first of all, we must move "Gnisten" from the field and put it in Danyard's previous training department at the harbour.
The ship has to dry out and then we can check it further to see what the extent of restoration is necessary. But we are all hopeful that we can get "Gnisten" back to its original state again.

On a terribly, cold Friday morning at the end of January, we met at Baekvej to look at "Gnisten" again.
"Are you sure we can actually restore Gnisten", "are you sure it is Gnisten" and "won't it be cheaper to build a new ship" were some of the comments made, as we walked around viewing the ship. But with the ship's original technical drawings and a photo from its proud heyday in our hands, we were absolutely certain that this was the right ship.

We needed a carriage to put it on, so we found an old undercarriage, which needed some alterations to it. Some men "boiled" pieces off the carriage and others "glued" pieces on - there was a lot of activity.
We had to make like a cradle on the carriage to place "Gnisten" in. This will make it easier to move the whole lot.

In May 2002 "Gnisten" will be placed on the carriage and moved to the harbour. Former master Leif Schmidt and driver Frederik Jensen have acquired a crane from Oerskov's shipyard to lift "Gnisten" from the field and onto the lorry. Of course, we had to be in the way for somebody and there were some irritated golf players, who could not get past us in their cars.

We succeeded in getting "Gnisten" off the carriage and placed on its new resting place to dry out. Everybody is now happy, as it is now time for a pint or two of beer.





In June, we moved "Gnisten" to "Iscon Stål" where it can remain to dry out. After the ship had dried out, we could see how badly the ship was damaged. The bow and stern are completely damaged and the keel is not much better either. There are also some planks of wood that need to be replaced.


At "Iscon stål" we could see our experienced craftsman at work. He was cleaning the bottom of "Gnisten" with a high pressure-cleansing pipe and it was looking good.
