The organisation's home page has a new design

On Thursday, 12th June 2003 The History of Frederikhavn's Shipyard presented its new home page. During the past three months, three datamatic students, Anette Iversen, Kirsten Kokholm and Linda Rath have met the "old" dockers to teach them how to create a home page.
"It was hard", said Bent Jensen, "just as hard as the time I learnt how to build ships at the Technical College".

Even if we say so ourselves, our home page is not too bad but I doubt if we will ever be finished with it. It should more or less be considered as a "living" book as we will continually add all we find out about the town, shipbuilding, the ships and the tools used.

Danish shipbuilding has been one of the main cornerstones of the Danish industry. But today, shipbuilding is just a shadow of its former self as only one of the old shipyards is left. All the others have closed down.

During the last 130 years, shipbuilding has also been the foundation of Frederikshavn and its development. There are only three shipyards left in the municipality, two wooden shipyards and one steel shipyard. From being an industry with thousands of employees, we can only count a few hundred employees today.

We would like to dwell a little on this story, which tells us so much about ships, the handcrafts used and traditions. Not because we want to re-live the past, but because we believe we have something to be proud of. We should be proud of what our parents, our grand -parents and our great -grandparents have achieved as they have made it possible for us to grow up in a safe environment.

We cannot make a living by restoring old ships, but we can learn from it. We cannot make a living by having a shipyard museum, but we can learn from it.

Help us to take the old traditions, the old handcrafts and the old ships into the future.
