"Vaerft Historisk selskab" (The organisation, "The History of the Shipyards of Frederikshavn") has the following vision:
- Within the next ten years, Frederikshavn is the centre for the history of the Danish shipbuilding industry.
- Within the next fifteen years, Frederikshavn is the centre for the promotion of the history of the Danish shipbuilding industry.
- Within the next twenty years, Frederikshavn is the research centre for the history of the Danish shipbuilding industry.
- In the future, Frederikshavn is the centre for the preservation of the old shipbuilding skills and handwork.
In Frederikshavn, we have a unique opportunity to gather expertise, tools and background material for research into the history of shipyards and for the promotion of this knowledge. This is difficult to do in other places in Denmark and also in Europe. The town of Frederikshavn has the recent suffering of a closed shipyard to draw upon and to assist us in this project.
We have started "Vaerft Historisk selskab" organisation because we wanted to gather together all the best people to preserve and re-tell the history of the shipyards, which was one of the largest industries in Denmark.
We work closely with local government officials, local unions, museums and educational institutes to develop an attraction for the town and for the thousands of tourists that visit Frederikshavn and our beautiful region every year.
We would like to create a "working" exhibition centre, where the old shipbuilding methods will be used and shown, to build ships according to the old drawings and where we will use the original methods of reparation to repair old ships. The Ship Preservation Fund contributes to the preservation of the many beautiful, old wooden ships, which still sail today.
We would also like to preserve the nearly 100 year-old iron and steel ships. For this to be possible, we need to train people who can build and repair these ships using the original, old methods.
We would also like to preserve the old shipbuilding crafts and skills, like the ship's carpenter, the sail maker, the riveter, the rigger, the ship's blacksmith, the rope maker, the coppersmith, the electricians etc.
That is why we need to work together with different institutions, so they can help us to obtain these skills.
We will co-operate with The Ship Preservation Fund and Bangsbo museum, to create a collection of old ships, so researchers and anybody else interested in shipbuilding can see the models in their full scale and glory. With help from Bangsbo museum, we will build up a collection of tools, which can be re-produced and the models used in the "working" exhibition.
We would also like to create a document centre with pictures, drawings and other material about shipping and shipbuilding, which can be used by researchers the world over.
We have gathered the old experts, who are able to explain and to show the next generation how old ships are built.
During the next twenty years, this project will develop and will be described on this web page and by using video clips, we will also describe the working tools used, the materials used, the working functions and how they were all used to build ships. Some previous employees of the shipyard will also talk about their work, the ships they have built, the history and stories from the shipyard and its employees during the 140 years of the shipyard's working life.
